Cruising Noosa River in Your LAGEE Pontoon Boat
If you’re looking for a unique way to enjoy the Sunshine Coast’s Noosa River, it’s in a LAGEE pontoon boat. With plush seating and large, spacious decks designed specifically to your requirements, a LAGEE pontoon boat is the most relaxing and stylish way to explore the serene waterways of the Noosa River.
While kayakers have long explored the stunning waterway, most people don’t realise that you can take your pontoon boat out for a day on the water. Whether you’re cruising as a couple, enjoying a family day on the water, or entertaining a group of friends, most pontoon boats do not require a special license, and they still provide the luxury and convenience that a high-end boat would. Add-ons include pizza ovens, toilets, barbecues, and plenty of space for entertaining. While many pontoon boats seat eight people, there are larger options that can seat up to 16, which is the perfect model for those looking to entertain.
Action on the Noosa River
Running through South East Queensland on the Sunshine Coast, the Noosa River is a 60km waterway that flows south from Great Sandy National Park to the Coral Sea at Noosa Heads. Along the way, the river passes through the Noosa Everglades as well as Lakes Cooroibah, Cootharaba, and Weyba. In the Upper Noosa River, its waters are the colour of dark tea, a result of the tannin from surrounding Melaleuca forests. It is sometimes called “River of Mirrors” because of the way the surface of the deep amber water creates a mirror-like reflection.
Noosa River is a popular playground for many recreational activities. If you enjoy fishing, the area is a major hub for flathead, whiting, and bream, but it’s also popular with kayakers and pontoon boaters. Due to its calm waters, you can easily cruise the river with your pontoon boat; there’s no need to worry about paddles. Unlike speedboats, pontoon boats don’t create heavy wakes that can destroy riverbanks. You can jump off the back of your pontoon boat and enjoy a swim or just float serenely while you barbecue and enjoy the great outdoors.
Pontoon boats are ideal for fishing expeditions, with custom additions like rod holders and fish finders. Other pontoon boaters stick to cruising while they read, listen to music, and just enjoy their surroundings. However, you can also water ski with a pontoon boat, so there are great options for water sport lovers. Of course, thanks to the LED lights and comfortable floor and seating, a pontoon boat is safe for families and pets.
Tips For a Successful Day On the Water
Pontoon boats need a wide turning circle, so you’ll want to consider the best spots for launching and turning for easy manoeuvring.
Wide Turning Areas
The lower estuary is the most turn-friendly part of the river. Boreen Point at Lake Cootharaba is perhaps the widest section in the waterway, providing plenty of space to turn. However, this area is windier than most, so consider your water activity plans. The Noosa Sound is near the river mouth and opens up for a solid, sheltered turning spot. However, it is a busy area, so you may have to contend with river traffic, which can be stressful. Alternatively, the lowest estuary between Lake Doonella’s entrance and the Noosa Marina provides an ample stretch for wide turning.
Launch Pads
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the best turning points are located close to the best boat ramps to launch yourself into the water. The Boreen Point Boat Ramp provides direct access to Lake Cootharaba, taking you into the quieter upper areas of the Noosa River. It’s further from the ocean, but a great option if you’re new to pontoon boating.
Most people prefer the Noosaville Boat Ramp for its dual-lane concrete ramp. It’s in a higher traffic area of the river, though, so will require patience during busy hours. Additionally, there’s a dual-lane concrete ramp at the Tewantin Boat Ramp for direct access to the central river. Moorindil Street Boat Ramp also has a concrete ramp, and while it’s located further upstream, you can still access the centre section of the river from this point.
Just make sure everyone is wearing properly fitted life jackets, and you have the essential safety gear on board before you set off.
